The Commission has approved State aid for the region of Provence-Alpes- Côte d'Azur to help with the cessation of activities of fishing vessels in the region. The aid is intended to help the fishing fleet adapt to available fish stocks, to upgrade the fleet and bring it into line with Community requirements and with the French Multiannual Guidance Plan for 1986-91 (MGP). Aid for the département du Nord, which has also been approved by the Commission, has the same objectives, i.e. to modernize the fishing fleet. These aid measures will benefit small local fishermen who will receive from the regional authorities the equivalent of 10% of the investment costs of a remodernization programme designed to save energy and promote the installation of new navigational equipment, the diversification of fishing methods and the improvement of safety at work. * * *
