In February 2006, compared to February 2005, the volume of retail trade1 grew by 1.0% in the euro-zone2 and by 1.8% in the EU25. Compared to January 20063, the retail sales index fell by 0.2% in the euro-zone but rose by 0.1% in the EU25.

In February 2006, compared to February 2005, retail trade of “food, drinks and tobacco” decreased by 0.5% in the euro-zone but increased by 0.7% in the EU25. The non food sector rose by 2.2% and 2.8% respectively.

These first estimates come from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. [Graphic in PDF & Word format]

1.Based on data adjusted for working days. For the methodology, see News Releases 47/2000 of 12 April 2000 and 33/2004 of 5 March 2004. For definitions of published sectors see News Release 103/2001 of 3 October 2001.

Retail sale not in stores 52.6 (except for mail orders) and retail sale of second-hand goods 52.5 are not published as separate sectors as they are not required as such by the STS-Regulation. They are however included in the ”non food products” aggregate.

2.Euro-zone: Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Finland.

3.Based on data adjusted for working days and seasonal effects. The seasonally adjusted euro-zone and EU25 series are calculated by aggregating the working day adjusted series from individual Member States and performing an adjustment for seasonal effects on these series. Therefore the European seasonally adjusted figures for total retail trade are based directly on the working day adjusted series coming from the Member States and not on an aggregation of the seasonally adjusted indices from the Member States. The euro-zone and EU25 seasonally adjusted growth rates might differ from the weighted growth rates of the individual Member States. This procedure also implies that the aggregation of total retail trade is not directly based on the published details (food, non-food).

4.Data of previous months have been revised compared to those issued in the News Release 28/2006 of 6 March 2006, when the figures published for January 2006 were +0.9% in the euro-zone and +1.5% in the EU25 for the annual variations, and +0.8% in the euro-zone and -0.1% in the EU25 for the monthly variations.
