Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the border issue between Eritrea and Ethiopia

COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION EN C/07/307 Brussels, 28 December 2007 16857/07 (Presse 307) Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the border issue between Eritrea and Ethiopia The European Union (EU), aware of its responsibilities under the Algiers Agreement and willing to facilitate the solution of the existing difficulties in the relations between the two Countries, reiterates its unwavering commitment to support efforts to promote sustainable peace between Eritrea and Ethiopia. In this respect, the EU strongly urges both parties to refrain from any threat or use of force and to resolve their differences by peaceful means. The EU, while welcoming the commitments made by both Parties with respect to demarcation and normalization of their relations, urges the Parties to fulfil their obligations under the Algiers Agreements and relevant Security Council Resolutions and Statements. The EU confirms the Parties primary responsibility to resolve their differences and express its readiness to assist them in the implementation of their respective obligations under international law.
