Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner on bomb attack in Beirut yesterday January 15th 2008

IP/08/052

Brussels, 16 January 2008

Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner on bomb attack in Beirut yesterday January 15th 2008 Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner strongly condemns the terrorist attack involving a vehicle of the US embassy in Beirut resulting in the deaths of 3 people.

"I condemn without reserve this act of terrorism involving a car of the US embassy in Beirut which caused the indiscriminate death and injury of many ordinary Lebanese passers-by.  My thoughts go out to the families of the victims of this attack and to those injured.

Regrettably, this bombing is but the latest in a series of terrorist attacks in Lebanon, the aim of which appears to be to undermine the country's stability and security.

At this time, I wish to underline the support of the European Commission for Lebanon's independence and sovereignty, and to strongly encourage efforts to build political consensus in the country, including the rapid election of a President, such that efforts to combat insecurity can be redoubled."
