Brussels, 19 January 2006

Appointment of the new Head of the European Commission Representation in the Netherlands

The European Commission has appointed Mr Ludolf van Hasselt Head of the Representation in the Netherlands. Mr van Hasselt took up office on 16 January 2006. He replaces Nico Wegter, who retired last year.

The European Commission has one or more Representations in each EU Member State. The Representation in the Netherlands is in The Hague, Korte Vijverberg 5.

The Representation’s job is to inform the Dutch public about the European Union’s work and policies.

The Representation also serves as a contact point for the media in the Netherlands and reports to the Commission on events in the Netherlands that can be of special interest to the Commission.

Mr van Hasselt, a 49-year-old Dutchman, comes from the post of Head of Unit in charge of air transport policy in DG TREN (Transport and Energy) in the European Commission. Prior to that he was the Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the International Civil Aviation Organization. He has also worked for the Dutch Ministry of Transport and the United Nations organisation responsible for refugees, UNHCR.
