Local Government rallies behind Newcastle

In the wake of the floods that have devastated Newcastle in NSW, there has been an outpouring of support from Sydney councils.

In response to an urgent call from Newcastle Lord Mayor, Cr John Tate at least ten Sydney councils have confirmed they are sending trucks, staff and other resources to assist in the mammoth clean up effort. 

Cr Tate said a major problem is the amount of waste that has accumulated from the floods, that needs to be removed before vermin and other health problems arise.

Trucks and crews from waste contractors Cleanaway and JR Richards are already working while help from Manly, Fairfield, Marrickville and Waverley Councils is heading for the city to help in the wake of last weekend’s storms and flooding.

They were joined today by trucks and crews from Violia Environmental and Thiess along with Sutherland Council.
“Local government is a strong community. It’s time like this that we show how capable councils are. We can literally move mountains,” Cr Tate said.

The Blue Mountains, Campbelltown, City of Sydney, North Sydney and Ryde have also pledged their assistance.
Randwick Council is assisting Wyong Council in its response to the disaster.

“This outpouring of support is proof that Local Government is a sphere of government that works together for NSW communities," said Local Government and Shires Association president Cr McCaffery.
“It is gratifying to know that councils, which are often struggling to manage their own infrastructure demands, are willing to extend a hand to assist another Local Government Area.”
