Identity checks for Australian voters

Australian citizens will need to prove their identity when enrolling to vote or updating their enrolment from Monday, following the introduction of a new federal enrolment procedure on April 16, 2007.

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), NSW state manager, Tom Rogers, says from Aptil 16  people will have to provide proof of their identity when enrolling for the first time, re-enrolling to get back on the roll or updating their enrolment because they havemoved.

A purple enrolment form will be available in all Australia Post outlets, AEC offices, or via a new online form on the AEC website www.aec.gov.au   Green enrolment forms and forms downloaded from the website before April 16 are no longer accepted by the AEC.
