Council tells illegal posters where to stick it

The City of Sydney will try to reduce the number of illegal bill posters affixed to city street poles by installing poster pillars where the public can legally put up posters for up to a week. The proposal was similar to poster pillars used in Paris and Berlin, the council said.

The City of Sydney has identified 11 'hot spots' where it would like to install poster pillars, including inner-city areas where there are many small local pubs with live music. Development applications to install the 2.5m poles are currently (September 21) on exhibition for community feedback and submission.

CEO Monica Barone said in the 2006/07 financial year the council had removed more than 249,000 individual posters and stickers covering 80,000 square metres. The plan is the first phase of an overall strategy to reduce the number of illegal bill posters by consulting and warning organisations which continue to distibute them.
